ABSTRACT

Knowledge workers are fast becoming the pace setters in the societies of all developed countries. But the knowledge society also has its countercultures. The labour union rose with the industrial worker; it was in fact the industrial worker's own institution. The counterculture of the other half in the knowledge society is one of social status and lifestyles. The other - and so far purely American - counterculture is one of values. It is the counterculture of the non-business, non-government 'human change agencies', the non-profit organizations of the Third Sector'. The successful and growing non-profit Third Sector organizations also apply management internally. They work on making their governing boards effective. America's Third Sector institutions are rapidly becoming creators of new bonds of community and a bridge across the widening gap between knowledge workers and the other half. Increasingly they create a sphere of effective citizenship.
