ABSTRACT

In the mystery of the Church, all are called to holiness. An Italian bishop said individuals are called to glorify the Father, but also to glorify the Church on earth. Thus the opening discussion on holiness in the Church ended with irritation over who, in the medieval vision of the world, has the highest place in the kingdom of God. The short schema on the Church "could hardly be modified so as to include the schema on the Blessed Virgin Mary without her dignity and place in the Church thereby suffering, or without the door thereby being opened to erroneous ideas in the minds of the uninstructed". Mary plays a special role in the life of Christ, and thus within the history of the people of God; there is not enough space in the schema on the Church to express this role sufficiently.
