ABSTRACT

The Austrian educational system developed quite well because two of the participants were retired teachers who were able to report experiences from an insider perspective, and also because all the participants were mothers whose children had attended school in Austria. Moreover, the investigation of "voices of migrants" also enables us to detect the prejudices, stereotypes, and other forms of discrimination that foreigners encounter and cope with in everyday situations in Austrian society. The negative institutional attitudes toward foreigners and migrants are influenced by the actions of the Austrian government, which, at the time of the study, was constituted by the conservative Austrian People’s Party and the radical rightwing party, the Freedom Party of Austria. The group discussions were organized at two locations: in Vienna, the federal capital of Austria, and in Innsbruck, one of the largest Austrian cities and the main center of Austria's leading industry, tourism.
