ABSTRACT
From an Atlantic City perspective or anywhere else on the Jersey shore, everyone in New Jersey lives just off an exit of the Garden State Parkway. The parkway has transformed the Jersey shore from a strip of summer colonies to a year-round suburban sprawl. It is filled with commuters heading north every morning, and gamblers heading south to Atlantic City. The Jersey shore is the home of the Asbury Park Press and the Atlantic City Press, the third and fifth largest newspapers in the state. Atlantic City was once the queen of the Jersey shore, with grand hotels catering to the finest clientele. It was a resort in trouble. Its hotels were aged and threadbare, and poverty was taking the place of prosperity. South Jersey's sparsely populated Cumberland County is the only county in the state with three daily newspapers. Just south of Philadelphia and Camden lies Woodbury, N.J., the home of the Gloucester County Times.
