ABSTRACT

The Gandhi Memorial Academy was only a subdivision of the Royal Technical College, and the nature of the overall institution was to be determined by the college rather than the academy. Much to the surprise of the Asians, the report of the first working party and the white paper recommended the creation of a new university college in Nairobi that would preclude the Royal Technical College from an integral place in the contemplated University of East Africa. During the fifteen years of transformation, as the Royal Technical College developed into a university, the Asians agitated for reform. As the college grew into a university, the non-Asian contribution, of course, far exceeded that of the Asians. The Asians' contribution must be weighed not only in terms of money, but also in respect to their emphasis on a multiracial, multiethnic institution offering degrees in academic subjects.
