ABSTRACT

The most detailed attempt to classify satirists by personality types was made by a Dutch scholar, Dr. W. A. Pannenborg. Dr. Pannenborg discusses the similarities and differences of the two groups. The satirists in the first group are overemotional, in the second group subnormal emotionally. The satirists of Group One are particularly revengeful; Group Two is less so, with the personal and violent element less evident. The satires of the latter are more businesslike, gayer, often comical and witty, but also more shameless. Most satirists were far kinder persons than their written work indicated, but some were vicious and churlish men. Satirists have shown contradictory characteristics, but dualism is a characteristic of most sensitive human beings and there is little evidence that the contradictions of the satirists are any more startling than the contradictions of most human beings.
