ABSTRACT
In popular presentations of psychoanalytic theory, the “superego” is usually represented as equivalent to what is generally meant by “conscience.” In other discussions, it is commonly said that the “superego” is merely a fanciful way of representing the fact of culturally induced learning of standards of behavior. These translations misconstrue the natures of both the ego and the superego.
