ABSTRACT

Following the Islamic revolution in Iran, and since the beginning of the 1980s, suicide attacks perpetrated by Shiite and Iranian entities have become a prominent characteristic of Shiite terror. The issue of suicide attacks was also given due consideration by Shiite philosophical circles in Lebanon. Starting from March 1985, the circle of perpetrators of suicide attacks in Lebanon was expanded by pro-Syrian secular organizations. Israeli Arabs constitute an attractive target for recruitment to the terrorist organizations for the following reasons: the freedom of movement that they enjoy, their familiarity with Israeli roads, cities and customs, their fluency in Hebrew, and the fact that they possess Israeli ID cards and license plates. Suicide attacks are perpetrated by both sexes: Men only in the Islamic organizations and both men and women in the secular organizations. Suicide attackers are often influenced by peer pressure or the public environment supporting the national struggle.
