ABSTRACT

The finest relationships are those which arise spontaneously and informally out of the spirit of good will, mutual regard, and common interest and purpose which are the characteristics of a community. However, the very spirit of community leads men to want to extend their co-operation beyond the limits of spontaneous and informal action. The very nature of community is that of mutual interest, cooperation, and sharing. Effort had been made to create the form of community where the spirit of community was very weak. Some of the larger co-operatives are beginning to find boss rule or demagoguery creeping in. Real co-operatives must grow out of the spirit of community, though that spirit may be brought to life by good leadership. Given a spirit of community there are many forms of cooperatives which can add to the quality of the common life. The co-operative movement rests on the spirit of community, and cannot thrive without it.
