ABSTRACT

In order to understand the place of the community in society it is necessary to understand the nature of the whole structure of which it is an essential part. Human society is blindly and haltingly feeling its way toward an ideal organization. There are two kinds of social organization with which the community finds itself associated. One of these relates to size and extent. With regard to community organization, the tendency in America is still strongly toward functional or regional-functional association, with small thought for the unifying of community life and interest for general life purposes. Many a small community could supply more of its own food, services, and supplies. Even most of the community cultural activities of the city are concerns of small elements of the population. Between the one extreme of dissolution through being submerged by larger units, and the other extreme of being an isolated and provincial social unit, the community must seek its best place.
