ABSTRACT

Everyday experience constantly proves that many people, especially on questions regarding the life of the community, tend to think in very vague terms which easily make them miss that crucial nuance which sharply divides truth from error. Concerning undisguised socialism only a few words are needed in order to characterize its harmful effects on society, especially since it has long ceased to be a Utopia giving room to every whim of the imagination. The most intelligent among those "social engineers" who demand the complete "functionalization" of man—the sociologist Karl Mannheim, mentioned above, is one of them—have at least this advantage over the others that they clearly recognize the process of our society's spiritual collectivization. What applies to collectivism and totalitarianism in general is true of mechanized social welfare in particular. it is basically a problem of the total economic and social structure, which in turn must be seen against the background of the general crisis of civilisation.
