Just as philosophical idealism in general is a name for a common trend in a diversity of philosophical approaches, so many types of ethical and social theory may be characterized as idealist by their emphasis on the primacy of the spirit, the degree to which they rely on non-empirical methods, and the extent to which they involve a non-worldly outlook.
