ABSTRACT

Germany was, from the very beginning, tied up with a framework that was universal in scope. There are two main historical determinants which set the Germans on their fateful road to totalization. One of them is the special German disposition for total state control, and the other is the likewise characteristically German disposition for the splitting of personality. From the outset, and throughout its course, German history has been a history of splits, beginning with the Roman Limes which cut the country into two sections, one Romanized and the other remaining thoroughly Nordic, carrying strong pagan and at least some semi-barbarian psychic undercurrents. Terror is the most effective political instrument. One of the basic functions of terror is to wipe out the rational connection between government decisions and individual fate. The principle of selection of the forced workers of the camps is direct terroristic calculation.
