ABSTRACT

In 1984, F. Murray Abraham won an Academy Award for poisoning Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Today, Murray is being celebrated as something of an icon himself. One of the most distinguished American actors of the past half century, and also one of the most intelligent, F. Murray Abraham has always been known for his almost quixotic devotion to the stage. Few would dispute the fact that Robert Woodruff is one of the most visionary artists in the American theatre. Where there might be some disagreement is over exactly who this visionary artist actually is. In the first appearance of John Douglas Thompson on the ART stage in 1995, he was gorgeously attired as the French ambassador in the Ron Daniels production of Henry V. The American Repertory Theatre has chosen February 14 as the date of its 2011 Gala, but we don't need a holiday pretext to send Valentine's Day cards to Oskar Eustis.
