ABSTRACT

Two major distinctions related to age as a variable must be made, one between age and aging and one between age and education. The significance of age differences, whatever they are due to, takes on salience when sex is also taken into account, for interesting differences show up with respect to feminist issues that involve political action. The significance of sex differences in attitudes on feminist issues lies in the impact they may have by way of participation in the political process. Overall, participation increases with years of schooling and this is favorable toward feminist issues since increased education is related to profeminist positions, and the general trend in our society is in the direction of more years of schooling for both sexes. Although sex-role definitions may have ultimate political implications, especially as symbolized in the Equal Rights Amendment, they differ from more practical issues in that they are more profoundly personal and moral than political in nature.
