ABSTRACT

Wages cannot even be fixed and remain constantly at a certain level, except by virtue of this balance and the influence that all parts of society, all branches of production and trade have on each other. That established, if we increase one of the weights, it is inevitable that there will result a movement in the entire machine which will tend to re-establish the former balance. The ratio of the current value of wages to their fundamental value was established by the laws of this balance, and by the combination of all the circumstances in which all parts of society found themselves. The author does not go into detail about the objection concerning foreign commerce, which the author cannot consider a very important subject in any country, except in so far as it contributes to the increase in land revenue, and which, moreover, cannot be taxed without causing it to diminish.
