ABSTRACT

Every youthful experience is strong and lasting; but each is also different. Members of the youth movement have come to believe that only those who belonged to it know what it was all about. Members of the youth movement were as a rule between twelve and nineteen years of age. Initially (and for many years after) the big expedition was at the centre of youth-movement activities. Songs played a vital part in all youth movement activities, but there were considerable changes in taste and fashion. The romantic folksong was typical for the movement, but in the twenties, with the advance of the so-called 'liturgical movement', there was an anti-romantic trend towards stricter discipline and back-to-Bach. Shared experiences and adventures welded a more or less accidental group into a disciplined community. There might be a more intimate friendship between two or more members, but the feeling of comradeship and solidarity extended to every member of the group.
