ABSTRACT

The Hohe Meissner is a mountain to the south of Cassel: Lady Holle, a prominent figure in German mythology, is said to reside there. On the evening of 11 October. 1913, a great number of groups of boys and girls, including a good many students from Gottingen, Jena, Marburg and other universities, converged upon the Hohe Meissner. The Meissner convention started with a meeting of the steering committee on the Hanstein, a neighbouring mountain height. Bruno Lemke, a student of Marburg, opened the proceedings by summarizing the views of the Wandervogel and of the other organizations present, and a general debate ensued. Many of those who returned from the Hohe Meissner were under the impression that the great alliance of German youth was at last in sight: a union of the various Wandervogel groups within the Freideutsche youth seemed to be just round the corner, and some even thought that the nationalist and Socialist youth organizations would ultimately join too.
