ABSTRACT

Reminiscing about the recent staff development workshop that he had attended, Mr. Cosmo, a seasoned football coach and veteran physical educator of 20 years, thinks that the information was good, but attending one workshop with no follow-up was useless and unproductive. Bret is like any other student and he tries really hard in PE class. The unique thing about Bret is that he has severe mental retardation and related medical issues. Mr. Cosmo acknowledges that he needs to do more with Bret's physical education program. From previous experiences working with others, Mr. Cosmo believes in synergism—that the combined efforts of others are greater than the sum of efforts of an individual. Ms. Loo, the special education teacher, acknowledges that Bret's disability sometimes impedes his success in his other subject areas, but that he is a good student. For the next few PE classes, Mr. Cosmo sets up a schedule of reinforcement that he uses for all his students.
