ABSTRACT

Lincoln Elementary is located in an affluent suburb approximately 10 minutes from downtown. On this particular morning the weather is warm and humid. Ms. Angie, the district adapted physical educator, is elated because today she starts her aquatics unit. There are three 3rd-grade classrooms at Lincoln Elementary, with each class having 24 to 29 children. Mitch, a 3rd grader, has spastic cerebral palsy with moderate mental retardation. He is nonambulatory and has a slight hearing loss. The local community recreation pool is clean and generally provides a pleasant atmosphere for learning and recreational swimming. As the first day of instruction approaches, Ms. Angie goes to the pool to make sure that all the necessary equipment is available. She discusses in detail how she will handle including Mitch in the aquatics class. As the class ends, Mitch is all smiles. Ms. Bennett and Mr. Rob quickly help Mitch out of the water and into the locker room.
