ABSTRACT

Max Johannes is an induction GPE teacher at a private elementary and middle school. Each morning, 48 to 50 7th and 8th graders come to the gym for physical education. Max insists that some of the students at the academy frequently misbehave by talking back to the teacher in a negative tone, failing to listen, and not following simple directions and rules. When most of the students already have trouble listening, it becomes even more difficult to manage an overcrowded classroom. At the end of the day, Max reflects on his teaching and realizes that he must become more proactive and focused on creating a positive learning environment to prevent the disciplinary problems he faces with some of the students and ensure the inclusion of students with disabilities in his classes. Max has always understood that effective communication and taking time out to consult with his students, one-on-one whenever possible, is an important piece of the behavior management puzzle.
