ABSTRACT

Jeremy is a 22-year-old young man who is profoundly Deaf. Jeremy calls his friend Frank, who is working in Washington, DC, and he suggests that Jeremy join a Young Men's Christian Association or Community Recreation Club. Jeremy is thrilled with this idea. The evening manager, Mrs. Pappas, is very interested in how she can meet Jeremy's needs so that he can become a member. Jeremy starts off by telling her that he is concerned about the lack of communication because the center does not have a telecommunicative device for the deaf. The next concern Jeremy expresses is the availability of an interpreter. Mrs. Pappas ends the meeting positively, saying that she will have to go to the board of trustees to get permission and will get back to him soon. The orientation goes well and helps dispel some myths about Deaf people. Jeremy looks forward to going to the center every day and starts making friends on the basketball team.
