ABSTRACT

Having recently moved from the city, Roland is excited about entering 9th grade at Benjamin Parker High School this year. He feels that having a change of environment, making new friends, and having new teachers will be especially beneficial, because his experiences at Hyatt Middle School were not at all positive. At Hyatt Middle School, Roland was teased a lot, constantly bombarded with fat person jokes, and even threatened with bodily harm. As Roland walks toward his first class, the other students stare at him. Ms. Patton anticipates that Roland will feel out of place in the physical fitness unit, so she decides to assist him with a specialized physical fitness program. She also reads up on various dos and don'ts about diabetes and excessive obesity. By communicating with Roland's parents, Ms. Patton feels that they can effectively address his obesity and diabetes, which will better enable him to participate in class activities.
