ABSTRACT

In order to maximize production efficiency, thoroughly analyze and improve process before attempting to improve operations. Five distinct process elements can be identified in the flow of raw materials into products: process, inspection, transport, process delays and lot delays. Improving judgment inspection may increase the reliability of the inspection process but will have no effect whatever on the actual defect rate. Transport, or movement of materials, is a cost that does not add value to a product. Most people try to improve transport by using forklifts, conveyors and chutes, which actually only improves the work of transport. When a high-capacity machine supplies products to, or receives them from, several lower capacity machines, accumulation between processes is inevitable. Production cycles are reduced significantly by eliminating lot delays. S-type storage is not created to deal with any imbalance or predictable problem; rather, it is intended to simply increase one’s sense of security.
