ABSTRACT

Preparation before and after operations, such as setup, removal and adjustment of dies and tooling. Adopting single-minute exchange of die or one-touch exchange of die is the most effective way to improve setup. Clearly identify which of the current setup operations must be performed while the machine is shut down and which can be performed when the machine is running. To avoid the internal setup time involved in shut height adjustments, for example, die heights can be standardized by attaching blocks or shims to smaller dies. Standardizing the shape and size of dies can reduce setup times considerably. A bolt is the most commonly used clamping device, but securing it can be very time-consuming. The adjustments were eliminated by mounting stopper plugs of eight different heights on a single plate. By adopting the single-minute exchange of die system, Toyota achieved dramatic reductions in setup time. Adding multi-machine handling and autonomation further increased productivity.
