ABSTRACT

Rob, a human resources student who faced workforce management challenges and developed his own professional competence through experience, had begun to become active in both the Academy of Management (AOM) and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP). After reading some of Denise Rousseau's articles on "evidence-based management", Rob felt this was the way to build a bridge between the research and practitioner communities. Rob attended a SIOP annual conference and went to an all-day session on evidence-based management, led by panels of academics, practitioners and consultants. While at the conference, Rob did make some new acquaintances that had the same interest in seeing evidence being used more in making decisions. Rob committed to ensuring that students and clients knew what research could tell us about the probable success of alternative HR strategies and programs so they would not make promises to management that were unlikely to be realized.
