ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses how human resource student Rob completed the required courses, and was working on his dissertation. One of the things he promised himself was that he would attempt to find a school that valued teaching and that he would not be influenced by the higher salaries paid by the research-oriented schools and those who sought the big names. He certainly did value the high-quality research that was published in the academic journals, and he used the findings derived from those articles to further his own knowledge. While reviewing the listing of open academic positions, he noted that there were a couple from schools that were on the west coast, one or two of which were biking distance from the ocean. Rob thought of Cascio's comparison of Walmart's Sam's Club and Costco. The analysis pointed out that though the two organizations had similar characteristics, they had very different philosophies regarding human resource management.
