ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about a story of three graduates, Don, Annette and Rob, entering the human resources field, encounter and deal with workforce management challenges and issues and developing their own professional competence through experience. Don, Director of human resource (HR) planning for a multibillion dollar multinational", started the get-together by announcing that Howard had called him and asked him if he would be interested in an opportunity with a large private sector organization. Don met with a group of senior HR staff at the multinational, and the conversations seemed to go very well. One of the things they discussed was having the probable retiree enter into a training contract to provide focused mentoring to the younger staffing people, even after the scheduled retirement date. Don was concerned about their ability to implement the new enterprise-wide information technology (IT) system that had been selected. This would have a major impact on their HR IT system (HRIS) capabilities.
