ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about three new graduates like Rob, Don and Annette who are learning from others after entering into the HR field. Rob attended a session led by a field investigator for the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, mostly because it was where an attendee he had struck up a conversation with was heading. Most organizations have a policy that says base pay increases may be determined by two factors: performance rating and the position of the employees' pay rate in their assigned pay range. Howard James thought about making inquiries about teaching at a university that had a part-time MBA program with a concentration in HR. Without a PhD, he would have little chance of getting a full-time appointment, and he could not live comfortably on an adjunct's fees. He concluded it was time to get back to work and to forget about trying to formulate the firm's HR strategy, but at the same time to begin exploring options.
