ABSTRACT

This chapter relates the feelings of Don, one of the three graduates entering the human resources field and encountered workforce management challenges and issues. He was worried about getting some traction in controlling workforce costs in the utility, and revising the performance appraisal form, concluded there were two formats needed. The format for managers and professionals was focused on two considerations: how well the person did their day job and how well they performed relative to established objectives for the current performance period. The format for the rest of the employees was more based on performance on the job, using evaluation factors. Factors used for all the covered employees were: productivity, quality of work, dependability and adherence to organizational values and contribution to the effectiveness of others and of the unit. Don particularly believed that the form would benefit the utility and would address an important issue.
