ABSTRACT

Both Volumes 1 and 2 essentially address one large question: Of the core psychoanalytic concepts and formulations, which ones should be retained, essentially as is; which ones should be modified and in what ways; and which ones should be discarded, all in the light of clinical and research evidence and conceptual critiques? The core concepts addressed in Volume 1 are: unconscious processes, research on unconscious processes, Oedipus complex, and inner conflict. The core concepts addressed in Volume 2 are: defense, transference, countertransference, projection and projective identification, and psychoanalytic styles of thinking and writing. Each volume includes a concluding chapter.
