ABSTRACT

Different theoretical conceptions and different aspects of transferences are discussed as the extensive empirical research available on that concept. Specific issues discussed include the nontenability of the “blank screen” stance; the effects of transference interpretations on therapeutic outcome refuting the unquestioned claim that transference interpretations are necessary for positive therapeutic outcome; and the overlap of themes that characterize the patient’s relationship with early parental figures and themes that emerge in the patient’s relationship with the therapist.
