ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 lays the foundation for this aspect of the discussion by providing a critical overview of the growth of ideas regarding projective processes, focusing mainly on the visual element within the countertransference experience. I outline the development of attitudes towards the phenomenon of the countertransference and its evolution within psychoanalytic theory and practice, from Freud, Klein and Segal, Heiman and Racker, Bion, Ogden, Bollas and others whose work I feel helps to shed light on this particular aspect of the countertransference, that is, its visual form, even though it is not necessarily the subject specifically under study. I illustrate the concept with pre-published and original clinical material.
