ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that the vampires of the symptom plot are linked to another fantasy object: aliens. It aims to see that the vampire metaphor is not just linked to paternity but along with aliens it has ties to orphans, stylish punks, and more. The chapter also aims to tackle more events in the plot that had to receive a new motivation with the excision of the symptom characters. When Max reveals himself as head vampire, he becomes part of the symptom plot and a symptom character himself. For Max to become the symptom character of Grandpa gives us an answer as to why Lucy is desired as a “day protector.” The excision of the symptom plot in the final showdown suggests the conflict is between Sam and the Frogs. In the scene of the hotel raid, the Frogs react to Michael being a half-vampire, and Edgar Frog directly threatens to “stake” Michael if he interferes with their plans.
