ABSTRACT

While the early Reformers had minimised the sacramental nature of ministry, the Caroline Divines reasserted the sacred nature of priesthood, although cautious of a tight Christological focus. They considered ordination a sacred act, and their arguments for the emergence of a three-fold ministry underline its sacred character. The strong Caroline defence of an apostolic ‘episcope’ anticipates modern approaches. The Carolines maintained the validity of Anglican Orders, arguing through apostolic and personal succession. Their contribution supplements the ARCIC treatment of ministry in a way that reassures Roman Catholic commentators.
