ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the extent to which general schooling and interventional education actually deliver on this promise and contribute to staying within the 'safe and just space'. It also examines the links between education and energy access and consumption, both in terms of the role of education in promoting sustainable behaviour and in terms of the reliance of children's schooling on modern energy sources and electrification specifically. The chapter discusses the interactions between educational development and the shift towards modern energy sources. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) work on mitigation highlights how the question of lifestyle is crucial for climate policy. Consumption patterns and lifestyles in terms of mobility and housing have a direct impact on energy consumption and emissions. The chapter focuses on the effect of education on sustainable lifestyles and consumption behaviours, and vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events.
