ABSTRACT

Some people who use and abuse drugs and alcohol have had success that derives from well-earned and well-rewarded efforts. Assigning alcohol abuse to the 3rd domain takes this behavior out of consideration as an autonomous 4th domain disease and places it in the realm of a willed, self-gratifying, self-destructive choice. Like alcohol, the recreational drugs marijuana, amphetamines, heroin and cocaine all have a euphoriant effect. In spite of warnings from the media and elsewhere, people continue to abuse food by eating too much, and eating too much of the wrong food. The food that is rebuffed by anorexics is pursued by bulimics with an avidity that is equal to the anorexics' rejection. Human sexuality is a problematic gift and a multi-edged sword. Sexual intercourse may involve acquiring or passing on a sexually transmitted disease. Some abnormal sexual acts override the centrality of the genital interaction characteristic of conventional sex in favor of oversexualizing a single body part.
