ABSTRACT
Chapter 1 provides preliminary working definitions of our key terms—early modernity, ideology, individuality, and identity. I explain the multiple references for the subtitle “thinking for oneself” and explore the book’s revisionist perspectives. The chapter concludes with an introduction to the chapters that follow, and offers a handful of caveats.
