ABSTRACT
The Dar al-Islam was united politically and religiously only during Muhammad’s lifetime. Thereafter, Muslims disagreed on the issues of who should be the ruler and what form Islam should take. Nevertheless, a culture grew up across the breadth of the Muslim world that facilitated travel, commerce, scholarship, and technological innovation. Despite political, religious, and linguistic differences, a recognizable civilization united the disparate regions of the Dar al-Islam.
