ABSTRACT

This chapter examines painting, drawing, poetry, mural making, collages, book and papermaking arts, audio/sound making, and other forms of art making as ways of seeing and knowing. It focuses on decision making regarding different ways in which to present research and the diverse types of writing that can be used for qualitative research. Art making presents the possibility of disrupting rigid disciplinary boundaries. In art making as in all arts-based educational research, one of the fundamental purposes is to create conditions and contexts where new ways of thinking are made possible. Art making encompasses a variety of ways of making art including collages, mural making, drawing, and audio and sound making. Art has drawn the attention of educators “interested in re-conceptualizing education in these times of testing, standardization and accountability”. Portraiture as an art form and as a qualitative research method have distinct similarities and differences.
