ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the role of digital media in formal education, it is important to remember that digitizing education is a wider phenomenon than computers in the classroom. The exceedingly rapid digitalization of all forms of education has led to great expectations and more than a little anxiety and consternation. Parents wonder whether our kids are becoming dumber as their phones become smarter. Few areas of contemporary cultural life have been as deeply impacted by digital technologies as the realm of education. The great virtue of computers in education is their capacity to individualize the learning process. Digital education allows many, many kinds of geographic and cultural boundaries to be crossed. Digital culture reinforces a fact that has long been true—not all education takes place in a classroom. The Web also opens the classroom out onto the wider world in ways that students find deeply engaging.
