ABSTRACT

Technology has contributed to a rapid increase in globalization and has both advantages and disadvantages. With technological advances great connectivity between nations are formed, however, there is also an increase in interest and cyber-related crime that is an unintended consequence of innovations in technology. Modernization theory, for example, is a proponent of globalization taking on Western values of democracy, capitalism, and individualism. Other theorists focus on issues of identity and the importance of being a global citizen. Some of the problems associated with globalization are the backlash of extreme nationalism that values the United States and eschews the idea of a global connectedness. Human trafficking has emerged as a problem that is harder to prevent in a seemingly borderless world. The Department of Homeland Security and other organizations have launched campaigns to identify, respond to, and reduce cybercrime. However, a global problem necessitates global solutions.
