ABSTRACT

The American political system is a democracy with three branches of government on the federal level: executive, legislative, and judicial. To qualify as a democracy a political system must at least be perceived as having equality across every dimension, since it is a government run by its own citizens. In America individuals generally choose to align with the political party that most closely represents their political ideology. The major political ideologies can be classified as conservatism, liberalism, libertarianism, and democratic socialism. Current trends in American politics include exceptionalism, populism, and nationalism. According to Max Weber, bureaucracies create rationalization that makes society very impersonal and creates a feeling of powerlessness, an iron cage, for those without privilege or power, who end up feeling they have little control over their lives. Voter advocacy groups promote social change in voting rights area through social media campaigns, volunteers to assist in registering eligible voters, and heightening awareness about the importance of voting.
