ABSTRACT

The American educational system is a complex system that includes homeschooling, public schools, private schools, alternative schools, colleges and universities. It relies on pedagogy that is agreed upon by society as important for attaining a job and becoming a responsible member of society. Schools vary in their curriculum and delivery, depending on whether they are public or private. Alternative schools include magnet and charter schools that began to proliferate as Americans demanded more school choice. Homeschooling has had a rising popularity as an alternative to traditional schooling. Problems in the school system include bullying and harassment that often start in elementary school. Higher education has its own set of challenges. The US Department of Justice awards grants to universities to reduce sexual assault and provide culturally specific prevention serves for LGBTQ students, racial/ethnic minorities, and students with disabilities.
