ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the need for flexibility based on awareness of our thoughts and behaviours and considered how adaptability allows us to implement positive changes. Flexibility is a fundamental aspect of change but, in order to be flexible, we must first be aware. Behavioural flexibility is about modifying our own behaviour in order to get the outcomes we want. Our state of mind has a significant influence on our thoughts and behaviours and is a powerful manipulator of actions that lead to success or failure in a given situation. The mentor’s role in supporting the use of more flexible approaches is twofold: in the first instance it requires encouragement towards reflexivity, followed by the need to adjust mentoring practice should the mentee be resistant to reflective activities. In turn this builds mentors’ own skills, knowledge and flexible behaviours.
