ABSTRACT

More generally proponents of truthmaker theory claim that there is a sense in which one may use truthmaker theory in order to rule out particularly suspect metaphysical positions. The Phenomenalist simply cannot locate the right kinds of explanation for the truth of the true propositions. Armstrong thinks that one may use truthmaker theory as a measure of ontological commitment. Armstrong claims that truthmaker theory gives a measure of ontological commitment that is superior to that offered by its rivals. To bring out a point already implicit, Armstrong believes that propositions are truth-bearers. A proposition has a unique minimal truthmaker where that proposition has one and no more than one minimal truthmaker. The truthmaker theorist merely holds that: Truthmaker theory: for some true propositions, there exists some thing or things that necessitate the truth of that proposition.
