ABSTRACT

In order for the truthmaking relation to be the connection between the truths and the world, the world would have to be a particular way. However, the world is not that way. Molnar appears to offer three distinct arguments against negatives: they do no causal work and so should be rejected; they are not perceived and so should be rejected; they are mysterious and so should be rejected. Molnar assumes an Eleatic principle, that causal power is the mark of the real: people should only admit into their ontology entities that have 'causal power'. Causal production is rather harder to define. Platonists about mathematics believe that there exist abstract objects - among them, the numbers. These numbers, these abstract objects, are acausal. In contrast, attempts to spell out a mechanism by which numbers produce or lead to the formation of beliefs will fail.
