ABSTRACT

The claim made by biologists - and which Baker insightfully recycles - is that there is a mathematical explanation for some physical phenomena. He then moves people to the idea that the explanation explicitly references primeness in the explanans, and primeness is a mathematical term - it is a part of a mathematical language - and denotes a mathematical property; a property of numbers. Well, if the claim is internally quantified, then there is no entity in the world that is Jonathan and that pushed open the door. But this seems implausible. Ontologese is central to Sider's conception of metaphysics. It is intended to be the language that carves reality at its joints. It is the language in which people describe the fundamental structure of the world. The core of Sider's thesis is that the proper use of the quantifier is the most "natural" use of the quantifier.
