ABSTRACT

At the present stage of the battle, as a direct result of the efforts of the common people, certain industries and services have been brought under the control of the state apparatus of local and national government. For example, roads and sewers, water, street lighting, libraries, parks, art galleries, postal and telephone services, education, railways, gas, coal, steel and electricity. The coal industry has been floundering chaotically for a quarter of a century, with many hundreds of independent companies. The crippling effect of exorbitant financial compensation given to the previous shareholders of these industries, which in some cases were bankrupt and rundown, was sharply attacked by socialist workers, but this has nevertheless continued. It is evident that there is still much explaining to do, to convince workers of the need to take control over the nation's industries and services. Industries exist because workers have worked.
