ABSTRACT
The economist or psychologist advise, not in a 'staff' relationship, as the mere extension of someone else's personality, and entitled and indeed bound to press their view of what is to be done right up to highest level of decision. For some purposes it is convenient to think of the social relationships in any society as a sort of sea of simultaneous equations, in which everything determines everything else. Each person is in relationship with a circle of others, each of these in turn with a further circle, and so on until the interlocking system of relationships includes the whole population of the earth. A change at any point in this system will cause further changes throughout all the rest of it. No doubt the remoter effects will often be negligible. But in principle, at least, the ripples will spread out from the first point of disturbance till they reach the limits of the system as a whole.
